The Pastors

Getting to know Pastor Dave Van Wingerden

I accepted Jesus as my personal savior at 9 years of age at a Bible Camp in Michigan.  The speaker told us that God has no grandchildren.  Several years later, at the same camp, I sensed that God was calling me into full time Christian service.

Getting to know Pastor Nathan Johnson

God truly is, always has been, and always will be good. It is exciting and a privilege to love, honor, and serve Him here at Kabekona Community Church. Children's ministry is a passion and a desire for me, whether it be in a church, at a camp, or in my back yard. Kids can be, and are a lot of fun to work with.

My desire to work with children's ministry began as a freshman in high school as I started working with my church's AWANA program in Wilton, ND. While in high school, I attended a youth conference in which God laid on my heart that I would eventually go into full-time ministry - something I did not want to do. After graduating High School, I tried to ignore the call and began attending Bismarck State College for computer science. The next fall I started admitting my call into ministry and attended Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji, MN. At Oak Hills, I received a lot of biblical and leadership training, and a change of heart. After three years, I had completed the requirements for a BA in Biblical Studies, when God laid it on my heart that this program was not why God had me there. I spent one more year to finish the Pastoral Ministry program in May, 2005. June of 2005, I joined this church as their part-time associate pastor.

In the fall 2005, God blessed me with a beautiful wife, DaNae, whom had been a friend of mine since 1999. In 2006 - Our oldest son was born, Joshua. In 2009, Jonathan was born, and in 2011 Joy was born. We are ever grateful to the Lord for the blessings He gives in our home, church, and family.

To prepare for that call, I attended Trinity College and Seminary north of Chicago. While at Trinity I met my wife Cherie.  We were married in 1970, and two years later we began our first ministry in California.  We served three churches in California as youth pastor and pastor of Christian Education and Family.  After 9 years in California, God called us to our first senior pastorate in New Jersey. We served as sr. pastor in New Jersey, three churches in MN and a church in Iowa.

We retired after serving 14 years in Becker, MN. We then spent two years as missionaries in Haiti where we hosted ministry teams from the states and coached the pastors of Victory Bible Church.  We thought our ministry days would conclude after our time in Haiti, but God had a different plan.  We are now serving our 5th church as interim pastor with Interim Pastor Ministries.  Churches in New York, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and now Kabekona, MN.  We began pastoring in 1972 and now 48 years later we are still at it!

This past August Cherie and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary.  We are best friends and God has blessed us with two daughters, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Four of our grandchildren are married and another to be married in December.

Between IPM assignments, we make our home in Austin, MN.
